An Android’s Apology!

Were we supposed to interpret that as sincere? Was that medley of poorly rehearsed mea culpas supposed to move us? No wonder the Woods team didn’t allow questions. Woods, obviously, doesn’t excel at feigning humility and he shouldn’t have to. With the exception of his wife and dearest loved ones, none are owed an apology.  But if you’re going to engage in the ritual of public remorse and high-profile redemption, at least make it believable. A simple admission of mistakes made just wasn’t enough for Tiger. No, the best golfer in the world had to try to convince us that he loathed the man he had become, that he had abandoned his faith and tossed aside his moral compass. Problem being, these admissions carry so much more credence when you arrive at them of your own volition and on your own schedule. As opposed, to say, during a break in rehab for a sex scandal that’s threatened your marriage, your career, and it appears your sanity (they don’t call it therapy for nothing). Worse still, after three months of silence Wood’s hefty moralizing and mechanical attempts at self-criticism were simply far too ambitious for a single statement, even for a gifted public orator (which Tiger is not). Sure, there were some poignant moments:  Tiger’s praise for his wife, the declaration that his marriage has been free of domestic violence, and his reaffirmation of the goals of his foundation. But no matter how long he held those pauses for dramatic impact (in this case, far too long), the ring of truth just didn’t resonate as he stumbled to read his remarks. The sincerest apologies are quite often the simplest. So cue cards be damned, Tiger. Apologize to the handful who really deserve it, hold your head high and stride back to the game that will forever bear your imprint.

What do you guys think? Did Tiger help or hurt his cause today?

Tiger Woods' apology...

Perhaps many don't really understand the enormity of what TW has done to risk the integrity of his life, his family, his career. If it took him all this time to speak to the public so be it...He was probably in shock! No doubt he is priviledged, but give him credit...some addicts go all the way down to skid row...he allowed himself to be checked in (ploy or not). Those of us who cast stones don't live in a glass house like TW. We all - well most of us - want privacy in our lives to live the way we want without 24-7 scrutiny, particularly when we really screw things up. We want to lick our wounds, heal ourselves and our relationships away from it all. We hunker down and share what we want with whom we feel we can trust. He has been blessed with this talent in a game that a segment of america holds dear...this is his karmic contribution to humanity in this lifetime. And that brings unwanted scrutiny. Whether we hold it against him or not, his admitted sense of priviledge is a result of years of distorted reverence, distorted monetary compensation, and distorted spiritual grounding. Often it takes earth-shaking, life-changing catastrophe for a human/humans to self assess. Yet now, he has a chance to move into a whole 'nother realm of contribution on even a larger scale, married or not.

He has a right to control what he says to those that are important to him - and even more so to those who aren't. He has always been an automaton to the public, so unless he takes acting lessons, why should we expect anything else? Hey, he looked nervous and hesitant; on a tight rope, you don't walk fast across that rope. You hold a long pole for balance and you step gingerly...so if he spoke slowly and stumbled...so what...he's been humbled.

Words are just that...words...but they have meaning...that's why we say them, listen to them, and record them in a variety of ways, blogs included. Yet, of course, we always await the actions they demand. We await TW's actions. We got the recipe, now the proof is in the puddin'.

TIGER WOODS

Come on buddy get off the

Come on buddy get off the guy's back - he plays sports and he had a private family lapse. What's all this bloodlust for? What a man does in his private life so long as it doesn't affect the public is his and his alone. But the public will never be satisfied because the skin has receded and the claws remain in their wake. It's feeding time.
