I previewed your magazine; loved the Coconut Grove piece [September/October 2007]. I enjoyed the Spanish-language segments because I’m trying to teach myself Spanish. [The magazine also] has good golf tips to be enjoyed by anyone of any race.

However, in “The Language of Liberation” segment, you listed Cuba’s Day of Glory and Independence Day as Jan 1, 1959. Factually, they declared independence on October 10, 1868 and set up their republic on May 20, 1902. January 1, 1959 is the day Fidel Castro took over. That is like calling January 20, 1933 (the day Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor) a Day of Glory or an Independence Day for Germany.

The results of Fidel Castro’s gulag state speak for themselves: murders, political prisoners, poverty, and many fleeing that “worker’s paradise” for our country and paying the ultimate price in the process. In no way should this tyrant and murderer be glorified in your magazine.

Letter #2

I finally received the magazine, and it is magnificent—so well designed with beautifully displayed, gorgeous photographs. Unfortunately, women, other than the ones displayed in your “Women’s Issue,” were nonexistent. What a pity. I would have liked to see a more sex-balanced magazine. There are many women in business who are serious golfers. Golf is not the sole premise of men.

In addition, women are interested in many other things, not just fashion and perfume. I noticed this trend when Golf Digest took over Golf for Women magazine. They turned a serious golf magazine into a fashion ad, totally disregarding the interests of serious female golfers. I have been a subscriber to GFW for many years, but now I am appalled by their downplaying of golf for the fashion hype.

I hope that as your magazine progresses you will consider being more integrated.

Your observations are well-appreciated. Greater inclusion of women is a goal of ours because as you point out, golf is “not the sole premise of men.” Please also note that while we are seeking to engage celebrity women who enjoy the game, we encourage you and all of our readers to write in and tell us of ‘everyday’ women who are professionals, entrepreneurs and leaders in other capacities who enjoy the game and/or are teaching it to others.

I think this magazine’s demographic seems inconsistent for the reason that one month you have an aged Fidel Castro [on the cover] and the next month you have a 30-something year old Tiger Woods.

I was completely appalled by Claudio E. Cabrera’s article “Do Unto to Thy Neighbor” [October/November 2006] regarding the bloodshed on the borders of the Dominican Republic. I had no idea. Much like your “Negroes For Sale” [February/March 2006] cover, the graphic really caught my attention. My best friend is Dominican and she always told me about the racial problems there but to know more is a complete shock to me. How can we latinos who pride ourselves on diversity—and thrive here in the u.s.
