Publisher's Note

This is an incredible moment in our history and I am proud to be able to talk about how much wealth is in our community. The good thing is that not only do we have capital, but we have history, culture and talent to no end. I commit this publication to you because without your incredible portfolio, none of what we do would matter. When we speak to sponsors, we are able to tell them about the amount of professional and leadership expertise they can bank on because of who picks up this book, and that means something.

I tell my kids all the time about reaching for the moon so if they miss, they will at least land on a star. Unlike the case with bank accounts or property, there is no limit when your wealth comes from people. In a way, this magazine is an investment in people—the ones the mainstream media considers invisible. People some in the industry said didn’t matter enough to warrant an entire magazine. People that can still find too many golf courses in this country that won’t grant them membership. You have made it clear from your responses to us that you not only exist, but you are here to stay. You manage businesses, buy homes and make financial forecasts for your ventures and your families. In other words, your dollars are green too.

At a time when an African American is making serious moves towards the White House, our community can truly count its blessings and come up with plenty. It continues to amaze me how much we have in our own backyard, which makes it unnecessary for us to look anywhere else.

Thank you for your support; it is truly a treasure.

I was just asked by my daughters what I wanted for Father’s Day this year. I was caught off guard because it’s May already and almost half the year is gone. It’s so true when they say: “As you get older the years just fly by.” This book is a tough one to get through every year as I reflect on the ways that I can improve as a father (please don’t ask my daughters that question) or a father figure to a person I hold near and dear to my heart—my nephew, Jose Roman, who I love as the son I never had.

“Obama has a healing message and consistently defies categories…he is, quite simply, a politician the likes of which has never been seen before. And he has the talent, courage and audacity to use his many gifts to advance the common good—to dream of doing the greatest thing in the world.” - an excerpt from the article entitled The Fire This Time from The Green Magazine’s February 2007 issue.
