Publisher's Note

Our Black History issue usually speaks about our past, and as was the case with previous History Issue cover stories, we try to bring something different and provocative to the table that will strike up a heated conversation.

This year our team decided to talk about the future. We will never forget where we came from, but we wanted to talk about how people of color are making great strides and blazing a trail for others to follow. Russell Simmons is a great example of that, so be sure to read his insights on politics, culture and much more on page 54.

Athletes and entertainers were examples of “making it” when I was a kid. Nowadays we have examples of individuals who came from meager beginnings to run some of the largest Blue Chip companies in the world. We also have an expanding number of entrepreneurs who have led their companies to achieve revenues upwards of $100,000,000. We have gone from pitching products to owning the very companies whose products we once pitched. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be Lebron James, but of the youth working on their moves, very few will actually make it into the professional ranks; and the ones that do make it are not guaranteed a long career. nsights on politics, culture and much more on page 54.

Apart from our time with Russell Simmons, we continue to deliver our mix of culture and politics from the Bahamas, Panama and other destinations. We also had a nice time talking football and golf with former nfl player Marcellus “Dat Dude” Wiley in a section that has become my personal favorite: “My First Time.” insights on politics, culture and much more on page 54.

We have a long way to go but we are heading in the right direction. As always we ask that you get back to us with suggestions about what we can do to make The Green Magazine a publication you look forward to reading. Thank you for believing in us and being part of our history.

I was just asked by my daughters what I wanted for Father’s Day this year. I was caught off guard because it’s May already and almost half the year is gone. It’s so true when they say: “As you get older the years just fly by.” This book is a tough one to get through every year as I reflect on the ways that I can improve as a father (please don’t ask my daughters that question) or a father figure to a person I hold near and dear to my heart—my nephew, Jose Roman, who I love as the son I never had.

“Obama has a healing message and consistently defies categories…he is, quite simply, a politician the likes of which has never been seen before. And he has the talent, courage and audacity to use his many gifts to advance the common good—to dream of doing the greatest thing in the world.” - an excerpt from the article entitled The Fire This Time from The Green Magazine’s February 2007 issue.
