Publisher's Note

This is our second Women’s Issue and I have to say I am proud to be a part of it. There aren’t too many publications out there making it plain how our audience—meaning you—have been regarded by the billion-dollar golf industry, not to mention how women have been treated. As usual, we are going beyond the links and hitting hard on issues that you think about everyday and that make you who you are. At this incredible point in our history, when a Black man and a woman are seriously contending for the Democratic nomination, we had no choice but to bend the rules a little bit more. Otherwise we wouldn’t be who we are, right?

We know you love golf—especially its gadgets and every chance you have to get to a beautiful course—but we also know you care about education, politics, art and more. Beginning with our lead on the powerful story of Marion Jones, we wanted to bring you something a little different than anything you’ve seen before. That’s why we took this opportunity to not only talk to and write about women who play golf, but women who are leading, innovating and generally making the world a better place— like the late Alice Coltrane and a dean and professor Vermont who refuse to take status quo as an answer. We also want to get your feedback on our informal national poll of what women want from government and its leaders.

No matter what, this magazine is evidence enough that new voices are cropping up to be heard in media, politics and more. Keep watching us and don’t hesitate to let us know what else we can do to keep you coming back.

    I was just asked by my daughters what I wanted for Father’s Day this year. I was caught off guard because it’s May already and almost half the year is gone. It’s so true when they say: “As you get older the years just fly by.” This book is a tough one to get through every year as I reflect on the ways that I can improve as a father (please don’t ask my daughters that question) or a father figure to a person I hold near and dear to my heart—my nephew, Jose Roman, who I love as the son I never had.
