A message from Rafael Martinez

As usual we have reason to celebrate. The sun is back out and the season is officially underway. I for one thought it would never arrive. If you’re like me you’ve been pacing around the driving range and chomping at the bit—all in anticipation of spending another summer on the links. We want to make sure that you make a triumphant return to the course. So this issue is all about providing you the pointers that will help to keep your game as sharp as ever. And while you’re on the course we’re here to ensure that your family is close by enjoying the best travel destinations across America and across the pond. This issue isn’t just about celebrating the sport we love. It’s also about celebrating the accomplishments of entrepreneurs of color. These enterprising men and women form the bedrock of this country’s economy and have been overlooked for far too long. I know I’m preaching to the choir here. But it’s important that we continue to acknowledge the hard work and thirst for innovation that allows these heroes to live the American Dream.

Speaking of dreams, you’re holding one of mine in your hands right now. And as always I would love to know what you think of our magazine. We constantly strive to bring you the inside track on the good life and it would be impossible to do so if we didn’t know what’s on your mind. So tell us. Send letters, pictures, emails, smoke signals— any type of communication that ensures our relationship remains vibrant and rewarding. Simply put, we are at your service. In order to provide an even higher quality of service, as of August 1, 2008 The Green Magazine’s website will begin undergoing improvements to make it rival the best web destinations around. We encourage you to visit thegreenmagazine.com to check out our latest innovations. But I’m warning you: set plenty of time aside because once you start surfing our updated features and videos it’ll be nearly impossible to tear yourself away. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed meeting all of the entrepreneurs that made it possible. See you on the links.

I was just asked by my daughters what I wanted for Father’s Day this year. I was caught off guard because it’s May already and almost half the year is gone. It’s so true when they say: “As you get older the years just fly by.” This book is a tough one to get through every year as I reflect on the ways that I can improve as a father (please don’t ask my daughters that question) or a father figure to a person I hold near and dear to my heart—my nephew, Jose Roman, who I love as the son I never had.

“Obama has a healing message and consistently defies categories…he is, quite simply, a politician the likes of which has never been seen before. And he has the talent, courage and audacity to use his many gifts to advance the common good—to dream of doing the greatest thing in the world.” - an excerpt from the article entitled The Fire This Time from The Green Magazine’s February 2007 issue.
