We’ve all seen the dangers of vulgar nationalism—the military misadventures, the brazen hypocrisy, the diplomatic dereliction. Being a principled patriot, of any nation, is no small task. But it’s possible. Distinguishing, without a hint of slack-jawed emotionalism, the best of what your country brings to the table—or the ashpalt—is always a step in the right direction. For sons of American soil, this means acknowledging a homegrown touchstone of automotive prowess that snatches collars worldwide: The 2010 Camaro.
Now every American taxpayer of goodwill wants GM to succeed. I’m no different. So some might give the 2010 Camaro undue props out of a sketchy sense of self-interest. Not me. Without a trace of hyperbole, I assure you the 2010 Camaro deserves all of the accolades that have been lavished upon it. It’s hard to find fault with this muscle-bound mechanical pony of the future. Though it’s clearly a product of the new millennium, the 2010 Camaro wouldn’t be the noble progeny of the original 1967 model without a heard of stallions churning under it’s hood. A 400 horsepower V8 engine is available for the SS models, but the standard 3.6L “high feature” V6 more than delivers. It provides the perfect heartbeat for a stocky champion that boasts imposing shoulders that stretch 75.5” across. A 6 speed manual transmission puts the Camaro’s 273 ft-lbs of torque at your full disposal. It’s classic recessed grill, painted aluminum wheels, and eagle-eye windows are unmistakable even as it streaks from 0 to 60 in an impressive 5.9 seconds. The Camaro’s interior offers a sleekly updated take on yesteryear’s dash and seats without sacrificing ergonomics. For the audiophiles, the Camaro’s Boston Speaker System will allow you to share the sonic nuances of your favorite musicians with any bystander in earshot—better yet, within rifle range. At the end of the day, you don’t have to be a patriot to salute the 2010 Camaro. You just have to respect that elusive balance between primal strength and aesthetic savvy—a merger which, no doubt, bears universal appeal.
