The V8 Aston Martin
The Pleasure Principle
The basic premise for the event was a test drive of the new V8 Aston Martin. There was also a DB9 and a DBS, but for the most part we drove the new V8s. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton and as usual the accommodations were well above. Julian Jenkins (Vice President & General Manager) and Anh Platt (Marketing Executive) of Aston Martin were fantastic. After the presentation of the new V8, everyone was eager to get out and drive for five hours. When we got downstairs, there was a big crowd on the other side of the street trying to figure out what was going on with these cars. There were six of them painted red, blue and green just like a bag of Skittles. The first thing that caught my eye was the interior. The detail was tremendous, phenomenal even. Once you get over its looks, you quickly understand that you’re in a real sports car. As we drove through San Francisco, in these beautifully colored cars we drew non-stop looks from everyone. Each car had a driver and co-pilot to handle the mass of the turns.
I began to think about all the cars we introduced to our readers over the last four years. The V8 has more than enough power for normal Joes like me who just want that excitement. We drove through San Francisco and to the Golden Gate Bridge. We then realized that these cars are made for city driving because once we accelerated our car handled a lot better and made for a phenomenal drive. It was so amazing that the Aston representatives told us that though it was a test drive, if we lost our heads and were pulled over for speeding, it would be on us. We quickly understood. I didn’t hear the roar of the engine until we floored it. The awesome sound that came out of that exhaust is unmistakable, and we hit unspeakable speeds. There was navigation system, satellite radio and everything else you could imagine. It’s an incredible piece of machinery.
My temporary love affair with the car and the sight of San Francisco’s landscape was amazing. I look forward to buying one for myself to make it an ongoing engagement.

True visionaries are often considered unorthodox. Michael Burton is no different. “When I go into a hotel or restaurant, I look at everything,” Burton says. “Whether it is the lamps, napkins, plates, seats or even rearranging the silverware, I try to get a sense of design and style wherever I go.” As Director of Exterior Design at General Motors, Burton’s idiosyncrasies are paying off. His attention to detail is only surpassed by a passion for honing today’s minutia into tomorrow’s design.
