Will Downing - Classique
Peak Records
By Laurence Bass
For 20 years, Will Downing has been the consummate definition of smooth. The rhythmic duality of subtle vocals and enchanting lyrics has created a sound all his own. Downing’s showmanship, no matter the venue, continues to leave audiences enthralled with his onstage charm and dynamic songbook. As he matured before our eyes—and ears—his sound has become more refined with the penning of each lyric. Classique, his latest offering, is no exception. Downing took artistic control of this project as he wrote, arranged and produced the framework with this, his 14th album. More Time is a wonderful introduction to the album. The keys are on point, the bass works perfectly with the drums and Downing’s voice rests easy on each note. His simple equation of easy listening with just enough groove is ubiquitous on this album and Something Special is the definitive evidence. This party track is a perfect example of how Downing harmoniously blends voice and music. Though he does shine on the majority of this album, Downing comes up flat in some areas. His valiant attempt at Barry White’s testament to seduction I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More lacks the baritone heft and accompanying strings of Love Unlimited. On the other side of the coin, Downing successfully adds an element of smooth to David Ruffin’s Statue of a Fool. All-in-all, Classique easily ranks as one of Downing’s best albums. Cuts such as Love Suggestions and Just Think About It win over naysayers and keep his loyalists happy. In an era where the lewd is often praised, Will Downing continues to show that being a gentleman is far from passé.
